Even the lady who does my eyebrow waxing said she thought she should have covered up during the President's recent Capitol Hill prime time press conference.

I thought she looked divine in the eggplant Narciso Rodriguez ensemble she wore. Purple is definitely her color.

Anyway, I think it is fantastic that she is toned, in shape and is daring with her fashion choices. I think also that people are just now realizing so many things. Black women are stunning...new style and trends in the White House are refreshing...and SO WHAT! I think we as a nation need to release the tight grip of tradition that we cling to, and accept that fashion is about making statements, turning heads and most of all being comfortable and having fun.

I have been pleasantly pleased with Mrs. Obama's fashions. I always wonder what she is going to wear next. I think she covers up when appropriate, and if it does not bother her, why does it bother US so much.

Aren't there more pressing matters to talk about???

(By the way, Mrs. Obama is wearing Michael Kors in her White House photo, Kai Milla in her green cocktail dress, Narciso Rodriguez in the third photo and a Jason Wu stunner in the fourth photo. What a comeback, if that is the appropriate word.

Unfortunately, I do not know at this moment what design she was wearing last night, but the black and white cocktail dress was stunning and so flattering. She also shook up her look with wearing blue pumps, taking a cue from our nation's First Lady Michelle Obama.

I also adored her shimmery, cap-sleeved sheath dress for her performance. I don't think I would have been gyrating and bouncing around on stage for millions of people to watch like that on my due date.

Kanye...Kanye...Kanye, I am really not digging this Full Force, 80s', throwback look now.

I really wish Jay-Z would keep her hair cut. I was thrilled to see Meryl Streep win Best Actress and Sean Penn Best Actor.

I also have been preoccupied with writing stories for a new gig of mine. I am the Atlanta Women's Style writer for the Atlanta Examiner.

Anyway, back to the SAG's. I was not in love with a lot of the looks this year, but I will say I am anxious to see what happens at the Academy Awards.

I noticed that there were a lot of one-strap dresses. I think First Lady Michelle Obama might have started that trend. There was also a lot of white dresses this time, which for me is always refreshing to see.

First up:

I liked Anne Hathaway, who was a vision in white. The Azzaro gown she wore was embellished with a crystal neckline and bodice. This Grecian look sure did turn heads. She also dazzled with her jewelry in where she wore a half a million dollar of Cartier diamonds. Way to bling it out!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 249px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SYDabgK18FI/AAAAAAAAAI0/1RsBwfWAPfQ/s400/annehathaway-SAG.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296473327814438994" />

I liked Penelope Cruz's look with the black Azzedine Alaia halter gown.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 277px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SYDaqo5-SuI/AAAAAAAAAI8/5oyZXjKI8UY/s400/CruzSAG.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296473587857640162" />

She seems to chose black often and it really is a great look for her. What made me take notice was her jewelry. I loved the touch of red in the Chopard diamonds that she wore.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 272px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SYDa0kVkjAI/AAAAAAAAAJE/74Zhq9VhWaA/s400/Cruz+earrings.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296473758429907970" />

I really liked Christina Applegate's red carpet look in the draped, emerald Emmanuel Ungaro gown. I really liked the add of the Lorraine Schwartz diamond chain. Sometimes going through a personal health issue, like breast cancer and a double mastectomy like she has, really shows a reinvention of oneself. In her case, she looks better than she ever has to me.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 265px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SYDa_SgbBAI/AAAAAAAAAJM/zwfuZP2zH9s/s400/ApplegateSAG.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296473942622143490" />

I am SO proud of this red carpet beauty, Academy Award-nominee Taraji P.Henson. She looked like a doll in the hot color of the evening white, donning a Herve Leroux gown. White Hot!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 297px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SYDbJuiZMaI/AAAAAAAAAJU/m-oY01KKsvI/s400/taraji-p.-henson.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296474121945297314" />

I think my favorite look of the night went to Kate Winslet. This girl is on fire lately snagging up all of the awards all the while looking stunning. Her pick of a electric blue, Narciso Rodriguez Gown and Chopard jewels was just breathtaking.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 265px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SYDbXkzEQHI/AAAAAAAAAJc/7LRL2DqAX_s/s400/WinsetSAG.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296474359849042034" />

Other honorable mentions are Freida Pinto, of Slumdog Millionaire fame, in a soft, periwinkle Marchesa gown.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 274px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SYDbnBj2EzI/AAAAAAAAAJk/7DJVPx4f-RA/s400/Freida+Pinto.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296474625267864370" />

Finally...Teri Hatcher in a dreamy, creamy white Monique Lhuiller. The dress looked like a origami surprise.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 254px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SYDcNeq9P-I/AAAAAAAAAJ0/u1yDWXWC7gw/s400/HatcherSAG.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296475285917351906" />

Camelot revisted

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 293px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SXe6BKEJRRI/AAAAAAAAAG0/if5AOYi6FXc/s400/michelledress-410.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293904416041682194" />

Tuesday's inauguration fashions were like visiting the age of Camelot during Jackie O's and JFK's time, when fashions at the inaugurations looked like someone just stepped off a runway in Paris.

The morning started off with Michelle and Barack's grand entrance with Barack in what seems to be a lucky color in his suit and red tie. Was it just me or was he focused all day?

Michelle was just stunning in her daytime glam. Her gold Isabel Toledo eyelet dress coat had just the right shimmer effect and her empire waist dress and jeweled neckline was just exquisite. I loved the long leather olive gloves and the Kelly Green heels are winning me over, because her look is refreshing. I also applaud Mrs. Obama, or the First Lady for braving the brutal D.C. cold in her cute, but not warm coat and walking ALL day in those heels. Bravo!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SXfBM-HF2SI/AAAAAAAAAH0/PX5iVAqGjYU/s400/Obamainaugurationmorning.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293912315572640034" />

Mrs. O dares to be different. She is re-introducing the world back to American designers, with Toledo and even how the little Obama girls were dressed.

Malia and Sasha were adorably age appropriate in their J.Crew wool coats. Malia's deep purple coat and Sasha's pink and orange, which is ironic given her fiesty personality. The girls looked like little dolls.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 298px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SXfBdZD3EFI/AAAAAAAAAH8/8cnCxXNGg7I/s400/obamafamilyclothes-410.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293912597684752466" />

I also loved Jill Biden's look yesterday during the inauguration. Her fire-engine red coat screamed in a good way and it is refreshing to see a youthful, innovative style back at the White House.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 250px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SXfBpRCtNZI/AAAAAAAAAIE/PT5fAw9kMYU/s400/bidensinaug.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293912801690858898" />

The President and the First Lady were absolutely stunning at the Neighborhood Ball. I have not read a lot of reports on whether Michelle scored a 10 with her ivory, one-shouldered Jason Wu gown. The ecru chiffon one-shoulder gown with a ruched bodice, fluffy appliques, and sparkly beading by Wu, a New York-based native of Taipei, has gotten mixed reviews.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SXfB583z2jI/AAAAAAAAAIM/x9hwDoYyO6w/s400/Obamaneighball.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293913088334223922" />

But, I thought it was spectacular. Michelle's jewelry was by Loree Rodkin, another American designer.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 328px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SXfCIZUdR7I/AAAAAAAAAIU/jogG86s6SM4/s400/michellering-410.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293913336488740786" />

I loved the President's white tie-tux. Very classic, very elegant.

Dr. Jill Biden's dress was also a showstopper. Her red Reem Acra is a great signature look. You never go wrong with a red dress at a black or white-tie affair.

The keyhole bodice added a nice flair as well.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SXfCWIaSdsI/AAAAAAAAAIc/oZLerfj62OI/s400/bidensneighball.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293913572467963586" />

The Presidential and Vice-Presidential families clean up nicely don't we think?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 392px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SXfCvMfA2PI/AAAAAAAAAIk/DKY6vbqiz7c/s400/Barackneighball.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293914003058252018" />

As an aside, I liked the Queen of Soul's choice for her inaugural song. Her grey coat and pillbox hat complete with the rhinestoned bow was very festive and that is the best I have seen her in a long time.

<img style="display:block; So far, Blake Lively, Anne Hathaway, Anna Paquin, Rumer Willis, Hayden Pantierre, Kate Winslet, Debra Messing all are wearing the regal color.

Kate Winslet just picked up Best Supporting Actress. Yay! Ok, I digress.

I don't know what Drew Barrymore was thinking wearing a bird's nest on her hair.

I don't get how Bruce Springsteen won for Original Song in a Motion Picture over Miley Cyrus and Beyonce. Caldwell previously opened Taste boutique in Duluth, Georgia on Sugarloaf Parkway in November 2004, and after seeing the success with the first boutique, she scoured the Atlanta area for a second location.

Last summer, Caldwell planned to expand Taste and open a third location in Dallas, but due to the recession, she decided to not pursue that business venture.

“I felt like the timing was not right,” Caldwell told The Examiner. “I’m standing still right now.”

Now, three years after opening “Taste II” at Atlantic Station, Caldwell credits her continued success to her celebrity clientele, mainly professional athletes and music entertainers.

However, Caldwell said her typical customer tends to be tourists.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SUgQSNd4r-I/AAAAAAAAACY/JA1tEnKmX-c/s320/Sparkle%27s+bdayTasterandom+003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280488468130607074" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SUgSeD6_kbI/AAAAAAAAADI/O_vycnFRdok/s320/Sparkle%27s+bdayTasterandom+013.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280490870750024114" />

The boutique carries denim brands, True Religion, Robin’s Jeans, Tavernity So, Dylan George, and Antik Denim. It was soft and just beautiful. I loved how the softness of the dress contrasted with her hard-core punk haircut. She looked exquisite!

Another jaw dropper on the red carpet was teen darling Miley Cyrus in her beaded black and gold Grecian mini dress. I love how she is always age appropriate in her red carpet choices. How chic was she on her Sweet 16!

I think Pink looked amazing in her sparkly animal-printed Viviene Westwood dress. I loved her side swept hair also.

I also liked the Pussycat Dolls who were draped in Project Runway winner Christian Siriano's creations. The ruffles, the ruching, the colors...they were so Christian! He is truly an artist and knows his craft!

I thought Alicia Keys looked elegant in her navy one-shoulder evening gown. The bindi on her forehead sort of confused me, but she still looked fabulous.

Lady in Red...and Black

I am still on cloud nine after the historic election of President-Elect Barack Obama Tuesday night, but one thing that got tongues wagging is soon-to-be First Lady Michelle Obama and her dress choice for Election Night.

As the first family ascended on the platform at Grant Park in Chicago, all eyes were on Barack and his dapper navy suit and bold red striped tie, little Sasha in her black dress accented with a huge bow, Malia with her red dress and mom Michelle completing the coordination with a red and black scoop neck dress by Narciso Rodriquez.

The red and black embroidered silk chiffon and satin dress that Obama wore was a less sexy version of the Spring 2009 runway frock that featured sheer black straps and sheer black beading at the hem of the dress.

While many in America's fashion world decimated Obama's fashion choice, saying it was a "misstep," and although it was not my favorite look on her (maybe it was the add of the cardigan sweater), I thought that it made her stand out.

Not so much as a fashion mishap, but at the fact that Obama takes risks with her fashion choices. So, she may not hit it on the nail every time, but it is all about trial and error right? She still in my book goes down in record books as being a politician's better half and one that comes close to fashion icon and former First Lady, the late Jackie Kennedy, with the classic cuts and the sheath dresses.

However, she did get people's attention and that has happened all along the campaign trail, (remember the infamous White House Black Market black printed scoop neck dress she wore on ABC's "The View," and the fashion scramble afterward?)

I just can't wait to see what ballgown she will wear on Inauguration night...

My beautiful booties!

Since it is boot season, I thought I would rave about the new boot craze: the peep-toe boots. What a wonderful creation!

Although I do not know if this phenomenon will work for some areas of the world, say in the Midwest states that get extremely cold winters. I think it is more ideal in milder weather winter states like California, Georgia or Florida. That is just my two cents. Plus the fact, it is another way to keep up pedicures during the fall and winter.

Whatever the reason for this new fashion, I dig it. I think it give sweater dresses and skirts an edge. It spices up the skinny jean and is the perfect compliment to the cardigan sweater and legging look.

Viva peep-toe boot!

Rachel Zoe Rocks

I was channel surfing tonight, when I came across the "Rachel Zoe Project" on Bravo, which features celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe. The episode that I watched showed Rachel at a New York Fashion week, where she was picking gowns for the Academy Awards for her clients.

In the meantime, she was dressing other clients, like model Joy Bryant to attend a Zac Posen show, while trying to get in some shopping for herself.

I absolutely love her and her job. I have heard about Rachel Zoe, but never experienced her fabulousness!

It re-energized me to continue blogging and findng my passion in fashion.

Here is a picture of Joy Bryant in the darling Zac Posen dress Rachel dressed her in. I loved it! Although the coat did not do the dress justice, it was a lovely pick to wear to a glamorous fashion show where you are there to be seen.

Two thumbs up!

Frugal or Fashion: That is the question

During these tough economic times and with the holiday season approaching, I wonder if retail will have profitable sales at all by the end of the year.

If I do any shopping these days, I head to discount clothing stores like T.J. Maxx, Marshall's, Kohl's or Target. I used to love strolling the aisles of Macy's and Nordstrom's, but with a recession, that is not really smart.

I feel like I should be saving any money that I get, but my shopaholic syndrome kicks in...when I'm bored, when I'm sad, when I convince myself that I need a new pair of shoes.

It is something to ponder. I often ponder every day as I am getting ready for current job what to wear, what is appropriate to wear to the office and what I can stand on my body in the dog-days of summer.

In my line of work, I have to leave the office often, and the humidity sometimes is unbearable and it feels that the sun is just sitting on my shoulder at times, so I couldn't bear the thought of wearing pantyhose to an interview.

I did some online research about what is the current trend of wardrobe wear to an interview.

Although I had my mom and my aunt's words ringing in my ears, "Keep it simple, less is more, always wear your classic string of pearls," I did not want to don a pantsuit, pantyhose or heels for that matter.

I was ready to march into my interview with a black linen suit, soft colored shell sleeveless shell underneath and peep toe pumps. But, my conscience got the best of me, and so did my good friend who works in corporate America and dresses the part.

During my contemplation, I found many style articles and blogs that even suggested that wearing the "little White dress" with a black skinny belt is ready-to-wear for summer interviews. I was blown by that. Of course, you have to consider what type of setting are you going to for the interview.

Another style blog suggested a fitted, high-waisted linen pencil skirt paired with a soft, feminine white cotton-blouse and classic, patent-leather pumps will do the trick. Throw in string of pearls, a hobo bag and minimal jewelry, maybe a subdued ring will do the trick. I found this look a little casual, but I love the idea of wearing it to work. That look screams Ann Taylor or Banana Republic.

Another style blog suggested wearing the traditional colors in suiting, including black, navy, brown or gray, but in lighter shades. Light-wool fabrics were also recommended, as they do not wrinkle like rayon or linen suits tend to.

There was also a suggestion to purchase many different tops to change the versatility of suits. For instance, chambray or chartreuse colored blouses can dress down a suit in most casual settings, while white and pin-striped blouses can dress a suit back up.

Some style experts say that wearing a twin-set as opposed to a jacket might be acceptable in some interview settings.

In the end, I ended up wearing my classic black pinstriped skirt suit, my black pumps with a patent leather toe, (closed toe) and I did break out the pantyhose. Call me classic! I did not get the job, but I think that my wardrobe did not have anything to do with that.

Happy Shopping!

The Mrs.

I have been engrossed in Presidential Election coverage since last year and just can't seem to get enough of it, even when I am furious about the latest political misstep.

I adore Barack Obama after having the most memorable interview of my career thus far, and although I have not had the pleasure to meet the "Missus" Michelle Obama, I love her style, grace and personality.

Down to earth divas always win in my book. That deserves a fist bump from me!

Anyway, before the millions of fashion trade magazines,bloggers,journalists and columnists ranted about her black and white White House/ Black Market printed leaf tank dress that she wore on ABC's "The View" as a guest hostess, I loved her gorgeous, purplish V-neck dress by designer Maria Pinto that she accented with a pearl choker and a lovely black leather belt and classic black heels. That dress accentuated her curves nicely, and you know how much I love flattering fashions on women with real shapes.

That was the moment that I spazzed over Michelle Obama's fashion choices. She seems to love this particular designer, as the July 7th issue of People Magazine showed some of her campaign looks in Pinto's red two piece dress suit and sizzling orange 3/4 sleeved dress.

Vision in White

Although I have my opinions about her father, Jenna Bush's pick for her recent nuptials on May 10 was absolutely breathtaking.

Picking a wedding dress is such a pivotal part of a woman's life, and I had to give the thumbs up for Jenna's Oscar de la Renta bridal gown.

Jenna was a vision, in the embroidered, organza gown, with a wonderful fishtail finish. Simple, yet elegant. Her look was complimented with gorgeous emerald drop earrings by Lorraine Schwartz.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SCSTAuqbEaI/AAAAAAAAABQ/EU2D04YclOU/s320/BeyonceCI.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5198441510627643810" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SCSTBOqbEbI/AAAAAAAAABY/AxONPskd7LA/s320/BeyonceCU.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5198441519217578418" />

I also loved new mommy Jennifer Lopez's look. Lopez wore an teal Alberta Feretti gown and the way that the gown fit her, you could not even tell that she recently gave birth to twins nearly three months ago.

I also liked newly engaged star Scarlett Johansson's look. She was ballerina chic in a Dolce and Gabbana cream and ivory tulle tea-length gown.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SCSTBOqbEcI/AAAAAAAAABg/U6TWt529mu8/s320/ScarJo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5198441519217578434" />

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen took my breath away in a daring and sexy pale pink cutout Versace gown. That dress seemed like it was made specifically for her.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SCSTB-qbEdI/AAAAAAAAABo/3G-GOX0itkk/s320/giseleci.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5198441532102480338" />

I also thought that actress/singer Hilary Duff looked splendid. She wore an exquisite Elie Saab gown accented by lovely Loraine Schwartz jewels.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SCSTCuqbEeI/AAAAAAAAABw/yJZ62THNkZg/s320/hilaryci.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5198441544987382242" />

Other honorable mentions go to actress Eva Longoria Parker, who wore a purple Marchesa gown. She seems to really like that designer.

I also loved Eva Mendes, who wore a dreamy aquamarine Calvin Klein dress.

Unfortunately, there always has to be one fashion disaster. Now, the theme of the Costume Institute Gala was "Superheroes," and it was obvious that Holmes was going for a Wonder Woman kind of look.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/SCSTy-qbEfI/AAAAAAAAAB4/4JFfqok0s6k/s320/KatieHolmes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5198442373916070386" />

The iridescent red Armani gown she wore was tragic enough, but then the patent blue shoes she wore with it just sealed her fate in fashion disaster history for me. Better luck next time!

Can't get enough of Christian

I was thrilled to watch the final episodes of the fourth season of Project Runway. I did not watch the entire season, but I wish I did so I could marvel at the main attraction, which was the winner Christian Siriano.

In one word, Christian was "fierce." From his hair, to designer eye wear to his over the top, flashy designs.

I simply loved all of them, because he created his signature.

I enjoyed his final collection tremendously. I agreed that his first looks down the runway which were mainly black ensembles were a bit monochromatic, but I also thought they were cutting edge and boldly dramatic.

I appreciated the ruffles in a lot of his looks and the chic silhouettes that were created in the total look.

I did not think that the look was a little too much, in fact, I agreed with guest host Victoria Beckham on finale night that it left me wanting more.

His last look that was a animal, safari print gown that was donned in feathers, and created an ombre look as well, was simply breathtaking.

That kid is on his way, and I want to be on the same "fierce" level as him.

Rip the Runway `08

I enjoyed this year's BET's "Rip the Runway" thoroughly.

A nice surprise was Zac Posen's collection in what is usually a urban wear fashion show complimented by the hottest hip hop and R&B music stars in concert.

It was refreshing to see how BET stepped it up, by adding one of the king's of New York, Milan and Paris' fashion weeks on the small screen.

Posen showed off some of his couture lines, and I loved the copper halter gown that had a fishtail bottom.

Beyonce wore a Zac Posen emerald green fishtail gown at this year's Movies Rock red carpet event and not too many critics liked the look, but it highlighted her hourglass figure that is very common among women of color.

There were several fashion debuts on the show, including the Respect ME, Missy Elliott for Adidas Collection, Co Co Ri, which is rapper Snoop Dogg's wife, Shante's line and Snoop's Rich n Infamous Collection.

I really liked Missy's line, because it was sporty and it is about time that Missy got an fashion deal, because she has worn Adidas consistently and it has become her signature look.

I found Co Co Ri to be very trendy right now, with the colorful and girly printed hoodies and the metallic and neon leggings or skinny pants. It is always thrilling to see spouses of uber stars take on their own business ventures and this is a nice start for the "Boss Lady." I thought the hooded sweatshirt dress from her line was adorable.

Sean John, which is music icon Diddy's masterpiece, was always thrilling to see modeled on stage. I liked the spring looks and pastel colors he used in his T-shirts, track jackets and plaid shorts, but I think what makes his line exceptional are the suits and tuxedos. They just seem to fit the typical broad shape of Black men and they just scream classic. Sean John's three-piece suits, which is Diddy's signature look always look dapper and fly.

I also loved the Sean John women's line for this season, topping it off with the silver sequined mini dress worn by Bad Boy Recording artist Cassie and also the black tuxedo jacket that was lined with black sequins and paired with black sequined pants. Ultra glam and I loved it!

Welcome to Hollywood

Last night, the stars dazzled and shined on the red carpet for the 80th Academy Awards. The trend for many of the actresses were to wear color and there were plenty of "ladies in red."

One of the ladies who was ravishing in red was actress Anne Hathaway, whose scarlet Marchesa gown screamed goddess. The beautiful rosette detail enhanced the lovely gown.

"It girl" of the moment, Katherine Heigl certainly turned heads in her columned Escada gown that made a statement that if you are going to wear red to a formal affair, go all out and wear that number!

I loved teen sensation Miley Cyrus red Valentino gown. It was very demure and the key words were: age appropriate.

Some of the stars decided to go classic in basic black.

I must say that from first glimpse actress Jennifer Garner left me speechless. I absolutely salivated over here black Oscar de la Renta fishtail gown. Garner gave all the credit to celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe. Kudos to Zoe for the blingfest on Garner's neck. That was simply magnificent.

I adored Penelope Cruz's Chanel Haute Couture dress, although I did not hear too many mentions about it.

Amy Adams was simply enchanting in that deep forest green Proenza Schouler fitted dress. There are not too many people that can wear that unique color.

I really was charmed by Marion Cotillard's fish scale dress. It looked like something from France and it was an acquired taste.

I also loved the baby bump look. Jessica Alba was simply stunning in her eggplant Marchesa dress. I really dug the feathers at the bust line. And, her hair was a nice touch too. I never have been a fan of the braided, goddess look, but it worked for her.

Fashion disasters included best supporting actress recipient Tilda Swinton, whose bare, pale face did not make a statement at all and the shapeless black drape she wore made me gasp. I just can not believe you would dare to wear that, especially as a Academy Award nominee. Ugh!

I also have an honorable mention for a fashion disaster.

Daniel Day Lewis' wife...what was she thinking?

Red Carpet Recap

I am WAY overdue for my red carpet coverage of the SAG Awards and Grammy Awards, but hey, better late than never. So, much tulle, sequins and satin, so little time.

Anyway, on to the SAG Awards.

For best monochromatic look, my pick is Ugly Betty star America Ferrera.

The gray and lacy Monique Lhullier gown she wore was oh so feminine and her 40's style hairdo just made the look complete. I really love it when women tastefully display their curves. What a difference a red carpet makes, considering her fashion disaster character she plays on ABC.

For the most daring look, my choice is Ugly Better co-star Vanessa Williams.

She usually disgusts me on the red carpet, and not many fashionistas liked this look, but I thought, what a beautiful pop of color and it also said, 'Welcome Spring.'

I loved the marigold Escada dress on her. I thought it complimented her caramel skin-tone well, and hands down, she still turns heads.

For my most dreamy look, I choose Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross.

She looked like a hot, saucy, Mommy mermaid with her turquoise Monique Lhullier gown. I am liking Monique Lhullier a lot on the red carpet this season. I sense a pattern here.
Anyway, I love when redheads with pale skin really know what colors work for them. Marcia Cross picks a lot of rich colors in her red carpet choices and I have not been disappointed thus far.

My choice for best white dress look, because once in a while, there is always one beautiful white gown on the red carpet is Desperate Housewives' pint size star Eva Longoria Parker.

I loved her white and metallic embroidered Naeem Khan gown, especially the cowl-necked, draped back. Once again, she wears dresses that compliment her size and shape brilliantly.

Unfortunately, there always has to be a look that I cringe at on the red carpet. This year's SAG Awards fashion loser is Angelina Jolie.

I did not quite dig the tie dyed, parachute looking Hermes gown that she donned. But, Jolie's constant companion, Brad Pitt, who looked quite debonair from his shaggy hair to his all black ensemble was a nice consolation.

On to the 50th Annual Grammy Awards.

Bajan darling Rihanna looked like a doll again on the red carpet with her tiered, funky ballerina Zac Posen dress.

Rihanna always looks refreshing for her age and I like that her fashion choices are age appropriate. Given that she just hacked off her signature asymmetrical cut to a punked out rock star cropped do, the look worked well. Ah, too be young.

I do not have much else to gush about concerning the Grammy's.

I usually look for Beyonce's look, but her Elie Saab choice was not appealing to me this time. It looked like she was in orbit. Better luck next time.

Loving Louboutin

I am in love....with Christian Louboutin.

I have salivated over these works of art for some time now. I would dream of wearing a basic black dress and taking my pick of picking over the confections.

Imagine a fuchsia satin pump with beaded black sequins at the toe! Or a crush velvet stiletto in a forest green color to jazz up a otherwise mundane heather grey or black pantsuit during the dead of winter. You can find those with Christian Louboutin. Not to mention the slick and sexy pop of red that you will find on the soles of the shoes that sets them aside from the rest.

What I love best about this Parisian artist (the title of artist fits him more than shoe designer) is that he looks at the most minute things in life, like a beautiful flower he admires while out for a stroll one day, and makes them come to life.

And, he gets that there is nothing that a woman loves better than a gorgeous shoe that she can slide her foot into, that creates a beautiful arch and makes her feel like the goddess she is.

Sexy, unique, decadent, magnificent....truly extraordinary. Those are words to describe these shoes.

Costly is another one.

The price is something that I can not fathom paying right now, but one day when I can, I will purchase a pair, bring them home and display it in my gigantic closet I hope to have as the piece of art that it is.

Long live Louboutin!

Ultra Ugg fan

I finally saw the light and fell in love with UGGs last year.

At first I couldn't see how these funny looking moon boots were sprouting up on all teeny boppers feet everywhere, until I finally moved up North and longed for anything warm to wear during the frigid winter months.

I bought a pair of UGG Classic Short boots in Chestnut and was hooked.

I have promised myself to buy a new pair every winter.

Not only do your feet feel pampered and snug in the layered sheepskin-lined boots, but they really keep them warm.

Now, no weekend goes by that I am not slipping my feet in them, or adjusting my wardrobe specifically to match my beloved booties!

The neutral colors match all winter wear and even looked good with sexy sweater dresses. Now, that the veterans are businesswomen and have retired from the runway, with the exception of Naomi and Alek Wek, the faces you see on the runaway are mainly White.

In a recent New York Times article on the sad occurence,former Covergirl BethAnn Hardison has brought the issue to the forefront by challenging today's designers about incorporating more Black models into their shows.

The excuses from the designers ranged from "Oh, we already have our Black girl," to the designers calling agencies during a go-see and telling agents that they had no intention of using a Black model. Call it blatant racism, but it seems to not have been labeled yet, but more understood.

When did the whitewashing of the runways happen? Recently, I watched the BET reality show, Baldwin Hills, where Gerren, one of the teens who was dubbed the next Naomi Campbell from Oprah Winfrey once, had a striking look, I haven't seen in a while.

I have yet to see her in recent fashion shows, and the publicity from the show should have been enough.

It is discouraging to know that as an African-American female, that if I were to visit any Fashion Week show, say a Tracy Reese show, whose designs I adore, it would be a slap in the face not to see any Black models in her show. Not saying that because she is a Black designer, she is obligated to have a mixture of models, but if I see a design, I would like to see a body type like mine modeling the design.

It makes sense to me. But, what is going on in the current state the fashion industry does not.

Mod Maternity Wear

Uber superstar Jennifer Lopez has been denying or not commenting on recent rumors that she is pregnant, and whether or not she is, I thought that she looking fabulous in fashions that I consider mod maternity wear.

She wore a funky Roberto Cavalli flared baby doll top and flared bottoms while performing on stage at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. While the ensemble was quite colorful, Lopez also revealed a questionable bump.

A recent appearance at MTV's TRL, where she wore a black and gray striped baby doll dress and thigh high boots, takes away the illusion of pregnancy by the busy patterns.

Another mod piece was a mint green mini dress from Lopez's own JustSweet label.

If Lopez is pregnant, then she is making a statement with sexing up maternity wear. Long gone are the pillow-like drapes that were the only options for expectant mothers to wear. If Lopez is not pregnant, then she is also setting another trend with trapeze dresses and camouflaging prints.

Emmy Elegance

I must admit I did not check out the 2007 Primetime Emmy's in its entirety last night, but I did check out the fashions.

The standouts were Ugly Betty's America Ferrara. She can definitely wear color. Last year she donned a forest green evening gown and this year, she wore a cobalt blue Monique Lhuillier strapless gown. She looked lovely.

I also adored Eva Longoria's sparkly silver Kaufman Franco dress. I love all bling and she was definitely shining on the red carpet.

I also loved Debra Messing's black and white fitted Ralph Lauren gown that contrasted with her fiery red hair. It was lovely.

Red was also a choice color for some ladies on the red carpet. I love Kate Walsh's dress. A simple crimson, cowl-neck dress set off by gorgeous Neil Lane jewelry. Beyonce wore a gold Grecian draped dress, while Solange opted for a silver metallic embroidered mini.

Young Hollywood star Hayden Panettiere electrified in a blue satin Roberto Cavalli dress, while actress Jennifer Garner was classic in a white beaded Temperly minidress.

Alicia Keys showed off her hourglass figure in a curve-hugging, strapless, black leather Herve Leger dress.

Mary J. What a night.

New York Fashion Week

This year's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York showed a lot of promise for Spring 2008 lines.

I did not attend, but I kept abreast of some of the treasures that were walked down tons of runways. Some of the designers that I liked I will do a quick mention of. I hope one day to sit in one of the white chairs parked in front of the neverending runways where I can take in the excitement firsthand.

But until then, here goes:

One of the first designer collections I took notice of was Betsey Johnson's spring line. She showcased party dresses that were multiplied by 10. I loved the lovely, soft pastels and black and white solids and prints with the frilly layers of chiffon and tulle complimented with sweetheart necklines and a satin sash with flower details. The look was as eccentric as Betsey Johnson is! I love it!

Diane Von Furstenberg, queen of the wrap dresses, showed her Spring line that is something spectacular. Her designs looked like something you would wear while on holiday in Bali or Southern Italy. Her exotic prints and lightweight silk, airy fabrics were something to behold.

The color of fall is definitely grey, but designer Reem Acra's spring designs showcased a grey cocktail dress that carried the neutral beyond the cool seasons. I love the detailing with the ruching in the bodice and intricately beaded cap sleeves. Very classic, very feminine and soft.

One designer that never seems to disappoint is Tracy Reese. Her spring line ranged from a modern take on a black pinstripe suit with large opague white buttons and diagonal prints to a fuschia sequined vest with white collared trim and black pinstriped bottoms. While I loved the yellow safari printed dress with a matching printed parasole, one frock that I truly marveled at was Reese's black and white striped dress with sheer paneling, sleeves and trim. Very classic!

Fashion Rocked

This year's Fashion Rocks highlighted the ongoing theme of how fashion and music compliment each other. Music is highly energetic and fashion paired with rock music is priceless.
Some of the show's highlights included rocker Steven Tyler's animal print head to toe ensemble.
Fergie, who dueted with Aerosmith was sassy in black sequined pom pom shorts. She also dazzled in a silver metallic sheath dress, with black beading that made the ensemble look like a flapper dress.

Punkster Avril Lavigne had a school girl meets goth look. She donned classic white short sleeved shirt and a black vest that was trimmed in beads. She topped her rockstar look with black tuxedo shorts. One touch that I liked with her hot pink highlight in her platinum blond hair.

Supermodel Tyra Banks kept it classic with a short black dress that had black fur cap sleeves. I love how she paired some stilleto ankle boots with her runway look.

Mary J. Blige also followed Bank's lead by rocking black patent leather ankle boots with her sequined mini dress that she finished with some black leggings.

Overall, Fashion Rocks succeeded with an improptu runway show during Maroon 5's rendition of "Be My Little Baby."

History of Fashion

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_K4kSJOW1z5E/R0spGLpjMFI/AAAAAAAAABI/wIBvvAGyiIg/s320/ebony-754644.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137244986129199186" />
The September issue of Ebony magazine is highlighting 50 years of fashion, with features on the Ebony Fashion Fair and the history of Blacks in fashion that spans over five decades. It was an excellent read and I learned a lot.

One of the reasons I picked up the magazine is because of the front cover. Supermodels Tyra Banks, Iman, Kimora Lee Simmons and Alek Wek graced the cover, which is pretty much a rarity these days. Rock stars and actors have pretty much replaced the supermodel so it is treat to see that the veterans are still in the game.

Kimora Lee Simmons spoke about how supermodels of yesterday have to keep up by becoming more of a brand. She is the mind behind Baby Phat, KLS Collection, her own perfume line and a wealth of other ventures. Tyra Banks has become a media giant, with her successful "America's Next Top Model," now in its eighth year, and is becoming more of a TV icon with her own talk show. Iman's beauty line has put her at the top of her game as she set the bar for supermodels becoming businesswomen and Alek Wek has become more of a political icon with her new book that details her harrowing journey of escaping the genocide in her native Sudan and being discovered.

One of the examples that the supermodel has been bumped off of fashion publications is Beyonce's Sports Illustrated cover. Not only did Tyra make history of being the first Black supermodel to grace the sports magazine years back, but Beyonce made history as being a major entertainer to grace the cover, showing that the tide has changed.

I have much more respect for Ebony's Fashion Fair Eunice Johnson who commanded the world's designers pay attention to her and Blacks in fashion. In fact, I am planning to attend the Fashion Fair this year, to see the same fashions that hit the runways of Milan, New York and Paris.

It will be interesting to see what the face of fashion will look like in 50 more years.

Long live fashion.

Swimsuits

Ok, after many failed attempts to try different swimsuits to conceal, camouflage and still flatter my not-so-toned body, I found some nice steals and not so cheap, but still beautiful swimsuits.

It is still not to late to sport swimsuits...even past Labor Day weekend. I think I am a glutton for the summertime. Anyway, BCBG had the most divine suit I have seen in a while. I really dig prints in swimsuits, especially ones that look like ethnic prints.

I had sticker shock unfortunately when looking at their suits.

I was elated to see Beyonce on the cover of Sports Illustrated. She held it down for the curvy ladies and reminded everyday women that the fraile, pubescent look when sporting swimsuits is out. I love her suit on the magazine's cover. Yellow and metallics are colors that compliment women with darker complexions, and you can't go wrong with coral, which is a summer staple color.

It is also never too early to stock up for next summer!

In Love with L.A.M.B.

There have been some fashion lines by rockstars and entertaineres that leave a bad taste in my mouth. Let's just say they lack imagination, with cheap materials and excessive branding on the clothes.

But, an exception to this tragedy is Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. line. I was introduced to her line when I was a personal assistant to a top retail seller at Nordstrom's in Atlanta and fell in love with the vivid colors and prints that have become her staples.

Take this outfit for instance. The L.A.M.B. turtleneck in typical jewel-toned fall colors, but a twist with the upper half plaid print and a sexy keyhole in the back. So, I went back to DSW, not sure if I would find anything....but alas, I located a true treasure.

I exchanged some black espadrilles for some Michael Kors sky-high four-inch "honey" colored leather sandals. Mind you, I gravitated to the black stacked sandals first, because I was keeping an eye out for a new black strappy sandal.

This sandal is so different from anything I would select. I became comfortable with my height of 5'8", but never dared to wear 4-inch sandals before. I guess I was insecure about towering over everyone. Needless to say, I rarely see a high-heeled Michael Kors that is under four inches, and since he is such a master at his art, I thought to conform.

I haven't broke out the sandals yet, and so far, I only envision one of my outfits that the sandals would look great in. But, now I am thinking about all of the possibilities.

I have not been this inspired about wearing something new in a long time.

Now that I have thought about it...should I exchange the "honey" color for the black?

Ballet flats: a classic

Whoever thought that ballet flats, the comfortable accessory used by three-year-olds in their dance classes would last more than one season. They have become the year round flat to sport.

Sequined, polka dot, basic black and pastels...whatever your flavor, the ballet flat is the perfect accessory. Not only do they defy comfort and do what Dr. Scholl's insoles do, they are very versatile.

You can pair the flats with skinny jeans, capris, long, airy linen skirts, or a sleek white pantsuit.

I adore this multi-colored sequined ballet flats above. Truly a work of art.

Mix and Match

During the warmer months, more daring fashion emerges.

One thing that I like to seen is how far people will go with prints.

Being that polka dots, eyelet and pinstriped patterns are finding their way back on store racks in pastels, whites, creams, neutrals, etc., why not pair the frocks with another patterned print to funk it up!

For example, pair a cropped jacket with an eyelet skirt to switch up the monotony that can come with just wearing prints alone.

While I am not knocking the classic patterns, I thought that it would be fresh if someone were to fish around in their closet and see what works.

Remember: Think outside of the box.

More to come...
